Nils Koppen uncertainty shared at Ibrox after Rangers behind-the-scenes decision

Andy Newport has shared his concerns after Rangers’ decision to promote Nils Koppen to the technical director role at Ibrox.

The Gers confirmed [19 November] that the club’s director of football would be taking on overall responsibility for the men’s academy, medical, football operations, performance and analysis departments.

In-house promotion is becoming a regular theme at Ibrox, and while some have expressed their delight with Koppen taking a more important role, Newport is not sold on the idea.

Writing via the Daily Record on Saturday (23 November), Newport said: “It’s hard to know given he’s never done the job before. His previous postings at PSV and Genk involved scouting and recruitment so it’s quite the leap to give him a wider role at Ibrox.

“Yet again this Gers board seem to enjoy remarkable good fortune when it comes to filling senior exec rolls, with the best candidate for the job amazingly already in-house.”

Will Nils Koppen take control in his new role at Rangers?

It has already come to light that Koppen has no control over the potential sacking of manager Philippe Clement, which will likely disappoint many fans.

However, some of his transfer decisions have helped the Gers out since arriving at the club. Of course, players like Oscar Cortes have yet to work out due to injuries, but he can hardly be blamed for that.

There will likely be several changes over the next few weeks as the Ibrox boardroom attempts to bring some stability back to the club, and Koppen will be just the first.

Of course, many fans and pundits will have their concerns over Koppen’s new role, but considering the lack of funds currently, the Light Blues must find alternatives for important jobs right now.

Only time will tell how successful Koppen can be in the job, and those in the hierarchy at Ibrox will find out if the decision was the correct one, but right now he just needs support.
