Nils Koppen already under pressure at Rangers after development this week
Peter Martin believes that Nils Koppen has already had the pressure at Rangers “heaped” on him after his promotion to technical director.
Koppen was moved to a new role at the Gers by John Gilligan as the interim chairman looks to fill the gaps left in his backroom staff.
Speaking on the PLZ Soccer Show (20 November), Martin shared his thoughts on the challenge that lies ahead for the Dutchman.
“I’ll tell you one thing, even if he’s filled it in, on two counts of director of football and technical director, it’s heaped the pressure on him,” he said.
“He’s going to have to unearth something [in January], I don’t know how much money he’s got in the budget but he’s going to have to unearth somebody.”
Nils Koppen has his hands full at Rangers ahead of the January transfer window
The summer transfer window for Rangers has left an awful lot to be desired among the fanbase.
One of the key areas that needed strengthening was the striker position and while Hamza Igamane was brought in, he still feels far too raw to be challenging Cyriel Dessers for his starting spot.
Admittedly, over the last couple of seasons, the Nigeria international has found himself topping the scoring charts for Philippe Clement’s team but the amount of chances he has to miss in games to score one is unsustainable.
If Dessers managed to bag every chance he was given, he’d undoubtedly be one of, if not the best number nines in the league but instead, his inconsistency has hindered him and his team.

Rangers need to start making their way up the table and chopping away at the nine-point gap between themselves and their title rivals.
And, if Koppen can’t find the right players to bring in for the budget he has in January, the Gers could find themselves dropping further down the table with nothing to show for their efforts.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s job could now be safe thanks to Nils Koppens’ promotion.
