Rangers CEO appointment weeks away as announcement mooted
John Walker has suggested the possible announcement of a new CEO at Rangers could be weeks away after recent developments at the club.
Nils Koppen has been appointed as the technical director [BBC, 19 November], having joined the Gers at the start of the year as the director of football recruitment.
Speaking on the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast [20 November], Walker slammed the Light Blues for how they’ve been run and believes a new chief executive might already have been appointed at the club.
“He’s (Koppen) a guy that’s come in, and he’s probably looked at Rangers and went, for a club this size in modern football, they are run terribly. It’s awful the way that the club has been run.
“I think he sees a lot of that already installed in the recruitment side. He’s quite comfortable to take that over because he must see gaps in the academy, in the club’s structure.
“And the caveat to all that, all of these promotions, the Philippe Clement new contract, it only stands to right if there’s a CEO kind of already been appointed in the background that we don’t know about and is going to be announced in the next four to eight weeks.”
Rangers need to find stability
Rangers have been without a CEO since James Bisgrove’s departure earlier this year, and the Bears have also been operating without a permanent chairman.
John Gilligan took interim charge after John Bennett stepped down, and things have gone further downhill since then.
Philippe Clement took charge of the team after Michael Beale’s exit, and the Belgian turned the tide, with the club offering him a contract extension since.
The Belgian has struggled to get the best out of the team in the current campaign, though, and in hindsight, it feels strange that the Light Blues offered to extend his terms when it wasn’t needed.

Rangers could see the 50-year-old move on to greener pastures with the Belgium FA eyeing him [Daily Record, 18 November], but Ibrox News understands that they won’t approach the former Monaco head coach unless he’s sacked.
Whether a new CEO has already been appointed remains to be seen, but they’ll arguably have a lot of work on their hands once they start working for the Bears.
