Rangers hierarchy have nowhere to hide after Connor Goldson ‘pinnacle’ admission
Connor Goldson’s comments about Rangers’ failure to build on their 2021 Scottish Premiership title will leave fans despondent.
In an interview with the Daily Record (18 November), Goldson bemoaned the lack of progress both on and off the pitch since winning their 55th league crown under Steven Gerrard.
Highlighting ominous comments made by Gerrard in the wake of their drought-breaking title, Goldson argued that his former employers missed the chance to keep arch-rivals Celtic at arm’s length.
He said: “Winning that title was amazing – but I don’t think Rangers as a club has ever been the same since.
“I always remember the interview Steven gave after winning it when he talked about fixing the roof while the sun was shining.
“Did they ever really do that? I don’t think so. That’s a shame because the foundation we had then was the strongest the club has had for a long time.
“When I look back, we knew we weren’t getting stronger. We tried our best afterwards but that was the pinnacle – that was our chance to really progress and to stretch away from Celtic.”
Rangers failures laid bare as Connor Goldson comments ring true
Just over three years have passed since title number 55 was won, yet in the period since the Light Blues haven’t really come close to challenging Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.
That looks set to continue this season too, with Philippe Clement’s side already nine points off the pace behind their Old Firm rivals; Aberdeen also flying high and both sides beating the Gers this term.

At the top of the Ibrox hierarchy, indecision and irresponsible spending has left the club a shell of its former self, with key vacancies all over the place and a £17.2million loss recorded in the latest accounts.
With only a hopeful plan in place to turn things around at boardroom level [Chris Jack, 13 November], many a Bears fan won’t have much faith in the gap to Celtic closing any time soon.
Had the figurative Ibrox roof – and perhaps the actual Copland Road Stand – been fixed with the sun still shining, it almost doesn’t bare thinking about just how much better things could be in Govan right now.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement will be concerned by one of his key players’ displays on international duty recently.
