Cyriel Dessers slammed after ‘Slack’ Rangers moment v Olympiacos on BBC

Steven Thompson berated Cyriel Dessers for his “slack” play as the striker struggled for large parts in Rangers 1-1 draw against Olympiacos.

The 29-year-old needlessly gave away possession on the halfway line forcing Nicolas Raskin to draw a foul to prevent the hosts from launching a counterattack.

Thompson was not impressed by Dessers at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on Thursday 7 November, but he did go on to score the equaliser in the second half.

“It came from Dessers’ slack link-up play,” he said live on BBC Sportsound [7 November, 6:12pm].

“It was a ball up to him by Propper, he should take a touch and try secure the ball, goes for the first time pass, it wasn’t accurate and it meant they were then on the counter.”

How much longer will Philippe Clement persist with Cyriel Dessers?

Dessers has been a far cry from the forward who finished last season as the top scorer for the Gers, his form is one in a long list of reasons Clement could soon be packing his bags at Ibrox.

The travelling Rangers support was forced to watch on in anguish as Dessers once again spurned two glorious opportunities which could have turned his one goal into three.

While he scored the equaliser for the Light Blues in the 2-1 win against Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup, his “embarrassing” open goal miss at Hampden Park is a clear sign he is not the long-term solution at Ibrox.

Clement’s Scottish Premiership season is looking bleak with a nine-point gap to Celtic and Aberdeen but, slim hope remains of a moderately successful campaign in the Europa League.

With Nice, Tottenham, and Manchester United on the horizon, Clement cannot afford to trust his forward line in the hands of Dessers and should pass the reins onto Hamza Igamane.

There is no denying that the striker gets in the right areas, but he will never have that killer touch to take Rangers to the very top.
