Chris Sutton makes astonishing claim after what’s said about Rangers and Celtic
Chris Sutton was left astonished by a Rangers fan after he said Celtic winning the Scottish Premiership is now irrelevant as the Gers are only battling for third or fourth place rather than the title.
The Gers have had a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign and find themselves nine points adrift of title rivals Celtic and surprise contenders Aberdeen.
While this is still a total that can be hacked away at by Philippe Clement’s men, the fan named ‘Paul’ who phoned into BBC Sport’s 606 Football Phone In (3 November, 1:08:40), shared that he thinks it’s embarrassing Rangers are now battling for third or fourth place rather than the title.
This claim then sparked a reply from Sutton, who said: “That’s astonishing you’re saying this, Paul.”
Philippe Clement needs to buck his ideas up at Rangers
Even if the Gers’ poor form isn’t solely down to the management of Clement, the Belgian will always be the scapegoat and fans will more than likely call for his head when things aren’t going right.
In reality, however, the fans should also look at the players and demand more from their team.
The form of James Tavernier has gone off the edge of a cliff this season and while Cyriel Dessers may find himself as one of the Gers’ top scorers this season, his performances have also left a lot to be desired.
Indeed, in the case of the Nigeria international, Clement hasn’t had much choice due to the injury Danilo suffered and the lack of readiness that Hamza Igamane has shown since his arrival.
However, if the Gers want to prove their doubters wrong, they’ll have to be on top form for the rest of the term, or, as the fan said, they could find themselves scrapping for third place, with the title a distant memory.
