Philippe Clement ‘finished as Rangers manager’ as Ibrox sack problem emerges
Journalist Calum Crowe believes Philippe Clement is “finished” at Rangers but may be saved from being sacked by the uncertainty in the boardroom at Ibrox.
The Gers suffered a huge blow against Aberdeen on Wednesday (30 October), losing 2-1 leaves them nine points adrift of the top two in the Scottish Premiership which has piled pressure on the manager.
Writing for the Scottish Daily Mail on 1 November (page 83), Crowe has suggested that the Belgian is done at Ibrox but will keep hold of his job due to John Gilligan being in interim charge.
He said: “This isn’t a team of young kids, despite Clement’s claims to the contrary. His excuse about them being a new group won’t wash either. We are now in November and Rangers are showing no tangible signs of progress.
“If anything, they are regressing further. Clement is clutching at straws. To all intents and purposes, he’s finished as Rangers manager. The only saving grace may be the fact there is nobody above him at executive level to pull the trigger.”
Philippe Clement may be done at Rangers
The 50-year-old has had some struggles at Ibrox since taking over from Michael Beale in October 2023 but it is as bad as it could possibly be right now.
Against the Dons at Pittodrie, a win was needed to keep up with the top two in the title race in a gap which already was sitting at six points.
After a poor performance on the night, the Gers are now nine points off the pace in the Premiership, leaving a huge mountain for Clement and Co. to climb.
There is just very little to be positive about right now with Nedim Bajrami’s strike the only moment of quality against Jimmy Thelin’s side.

Even with that being said, Clement could be set to keep his job for the clash against Motherwell in the League Cup on Sunday 3 November.
The messy situation as Gilligan searches for senior staff in the boardroom is only benefitting the Belgian and his job prospects at Ibrox.
