Cyriel Dessers might have cost Philippe Clement his job after what did in Rangers loss v Aberdeen

Cyriel Dessers might have cost Philippe Clement his job after his dreadful performance for Rangers in their defeat to Aberdeen.

The Light Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Jimmy Thelin’s side in the Scottish Premiership at Pittodrie on Wednesday (30 October).

A “moment of magic” saw Nedim Bajrami nullify Nicky Devlin’s first-half opener, but a 74th-minute goal from substitute Shayden Morris saw the hosts claim all three points.

With Rangers falling nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the title race, there are more and more shouts for Philippe Clement to be sacked and Dessers might have to take some blame for it.

Clement trusted the 29-year-old with leading the line for the Gers after dropping him in the 2-1 win over St Mirren at the weekend, but did not get anything in return.

Dessers was on the pitch for 83 minutes before being replaced by Hamza Igamane, but managed only 20 touches during that time (FotMob). Only Ross McCausland, who was hooked at half-time, fared worse among those who started for the team. In the meantime, he was also dispossessed three times.

The striker’s involvement was so little that he played only six passes in the game. He was ineffective in front of goal as well, mustering just two shots, of which one was a big chance missed.

In another unacceptable stat, Dessers lost every single one of his seven duels, including one in the air (zero per cent).

If the stats are not enough, the former Genk man did pass the eye test as well, with his awful positioning drawing criticism from James McFadden live on Sky Sports commentary on multiple occasions. He was one of the reasons why none of the six chances created by James Tavernier bore fruit.

Dessers was also caught offside three times, including in the build-up to Ross McCausland’s disallowed goal in the first half.

Mark Guidi is quickly being proven right about Rangers having to be ruthless with the forward and offloading him in January.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd ripped into Clement for what he said after the defeat to Aberdeen.
