Philippe Clement sack ‘problem’ mooted at Rangers ahead of Aberdeen showdown

Paul Slane has admitted he has “had enough” of Philippe Clement but insists Rangers may have a “problem” sacking the manager.

The Belgian has come under pressure after a slow start to the season at Ibrox which has seen the Light Blues slip six points behind both Aberdeen and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

Although Open Goal pundit Slane insists Clement “would be away” if he were in charge at Ibrox, he doesn’t think there is anyone left at the club with the power to dismiss the 50-year-old at this stage.

Speaking on The Open Goal YouTube channel (29 October, 51:00) he said: “I kind of stuck up for Clement in his time here, but I’ve had enough.

“I don’t mean that but from a pundit point of view, I kept going back to the fact he won leagues in Belgium but he’s been here a year now.

“There’s zero style, he’s got his own players in and I just think they’re so slow on the ball. I don’t think they’ve got an idea of what they’re trying to do.

“It’s hard to sack him because is there anyone there to sack him? That’s a problem, of course, that’s a huge problem in itself. But if Rangers was run properly and had people in the right places, for me, if I was in there, he would be away.”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement amid Ibrox exit speculation?

There has been so much movement behind the scenes at Ibrox over the last few months to the point that it is no longer clear who would have the power to sack Clement if and when the time comes.

The obvious candidate would be John Gilligan, but some pundits have called into question just how willing the Light Blues interim chairman would be to make such a drastic call at Ibrox [Gordon Dalziel, 24 October].

Ultimately, someone will have to make that big decision if the 50-year-old’s position does become untenable. At this stage, however, it seems as though Clement will be given time to try and get the season back on track.

Wednesday (30 October) night’s showdown with Aberdeen at Pittodrie has the potential to not only be campaign-defining for the Light Blues but tenure-defining for the Belgian.

He needs a win more than anyone else in his side at Ibrox and if he doesn’t return to Glasgow with all three points, it could see the Gers board take the action that Slane has called for.
