Connor Barron retrospective punishment update emerges after Rangers incident vs St Mirren
Connor Barron isn’t likely to be hit by retrospective punishment following the Rangers win over St Mirren, according to Behind The Whistles.
The Des Roach and Steve Conroy presented show responded via X on 28 October after a question about possible action against the Gers man for a high boot against Toyosi Olusanya in the 2-1 win a day earlier.
Barron, 22, escaped punishment at the time despite Behind The Whistles agreeing it was “identical” to the offence which saw Celtic’s Yang Hyun-Jun sent off against Hearts last season and should have been a red card as well, but they don’t expect him to get sanctioned after the fact.
They wrote: “Only way is if the Compliance Officer cites him, so probably not.”
Connor Barron set for Aberdeen return with Rangers
If Calum Scott overlooked the high foot at Ibrox, albeit in a game where the official hardly covered himself in glory, and VAR Greg Aitken also didn’t see fit to intervene it would probably be a surprise for a citation to arrive now, but it can’t entirely be ruled out.
With the crucial trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen coming just three days later (30 October) it seems like Barron is likely to be in the side to face his former club.
The two sides are still not settled on a compensation fee for the midfielder after he moved to Ibrox in the summer, with the matter going to a tribunal after the Gers’ offer was rejected.
Were he to miss games with a suspension as a result of the St Mirren victory it would obviously be a blow to Philippe Clement.
Barron was, belatedly, one of the better performers against the Saints but against little competition as the overall showing was pretty dismal from the Light Blues.
Why they had regressed so far from the rousing 4-0 win over FCSB on the same ground just three days earlier is something that the manager quickly needs to address.
Granted, it was a quick turnaround from the Europa League exploits, and Clement made some changes to the line up, but neither should have caused such a drop off in quality against a side struggling near the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.
Play anything like that against Jimmy Thelin’s resurgent Dons, with or without Barron, and the gap to the top will only get larger on Wednesday.
