Douglas Park still holds serious power at Rangers after what recently happened

Douglas Park still holds serious sway at Rangers despite walking away from the limelight at Ibrox, according to Andrew Newport.

The journalist explained in the Daily Record [22 October] that several influences at Ibrox, including ex-chairman Park, are sitting back and letting the ire deflect towards Philippe Clement.

Clement has had to act as the front-facing figure through some turbulent times, such as the dismal late defeat at Kilmarnock, with Park seemingly hiding behind his large shareholding and son, Graeme.

Newport wrote: “After all, why stick their heads above the parapet when they can let the fans take aim at Clement’s shiny napper?

“It’s not as if ex-chairman Douglas Park – who still holds serious sway at the club through his sizeable shareholding and a board proxy in the shape of his son Graeme – will be coming out to explain what’s going on. If he wasn’t prepared to do that when he was in charge, why would he bother doing it now?”

Douglas Park still holds strong Rangers power

Between the board mismanagement both during and after Park’s reign, the lack of a CEO or director of football in the building and the occasional pathetic performance on the pitch, Rangers fans are being forced to sit by and watch their side lose further ground in Scotland.

The away end at Rugby Park on Sunday 20 October spoke loud and clear regarding their views on the current state of play, hitting out at the board again.

Clement has been recognised as this “scapegoat” in recent weeks as he has to be the one answerable to the press, often about situations behind the scenes he can do little about.

For all that can be said about what the Belgian can control on the sideline and in the dressing room, there is a lot more at play here which those at the very top – the positions being filled at least – are harming the club without addressing.

In other Rangers news, the upcoming showdown with Aberdeen could be defining for the manager.
