Rangers cannot afford to sack Philippe Clement as new decision mooted at Ibrox

Rangers aren’t in a position to sack Philippe Clement yet due to a lack of finance and stability in the Ibrox boardroom, Ally McCoist has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (21 October, 7:25am), McCoist slammed the Gers’ abject performance in their 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, bemoaning the state of the club from top to bottom.

The club legend acknowledged John Gilligan’s efforts to stabilise things since stepping in to replace John Bennett as interim chairman and argued that Clement’s job deserves to be safe for now.

McCoist said: “We need to get a bit of stability at the top, from Rangers’ point of view.

“There’s no chairman at this moment in time, I know John Gilligan’s there – but there’s a lack of stability at the top. The spine of the club is not right.

“I don’t think the club are in any position to start getting rid of people because they can’t afford it financially. I’m not sure (Clement) has been dealt the best set of cards with what he’s been left with.”

Like many a Gers fan, McCoist is clearly struggling to identify a single aspect in which things are currently running smoothly at Ibrox, with the club seemingly in a tailspin both on and off the pitch.

Evident holes in Clement’s squad are starting to rear their heads, as is the lack of an identifiable style of play, but it’s in the boardroom where the real deficiencies are starting to be felt.

Gilligan stepping into the breach to replace Bennett a little over a month ago is yet to yield any semblance of progress, with the interim chairman’s priority of finding a new CEO still to be fulfilled.

Added to that vacancy is also the lack of an academy director and Creag Robertson’s impending exit as director of football operations, leaving Clement with very few in-the-know senior figures above him.

This could prove to be what buys Clement time to turn the Light Blues’ dismal performances and results around, but unless he can do so quickly, the ramshackle Rangers boardroom may be left with no choice.
