Michael Stewart hits out at John Souttar after what he did in Rangers defeat v Kilmarnock

Michael Stewart was critical of John Souttar as Rangers suffered a defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock on Sunday 20 October.

The centre-back played the full 90 minutes as the Light Blues lost 1-0 at Rugby Park and was at fault for Marley Watkins’ 87th-minute winner.

Reviewing the game, Stewart acknowledged Souttar’s importance to club and country but stressed the need for the 28-year-old to do better.

“John Souttar was outstanding for Scotland, but he’ll know himself that he needs to do better for the goal,” he said on BBC Sportscene (20 October).

“He’s been one of the main players in the Rangers side, he’s a very good player, but he has come up with a moment there that needed to be better.

“Marley Watkins did very well, there’s that little nudge just to keep him off balance and then find the bottom corner, a massive goal for Kilmarnock.”

John Souttar flops in Rangers loss v Kilmarnock

Souttar went into the game high on confidence after keeping Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal at bay with Scotland in the UEFA Nations League on 15 October.

However, things did not work out for the defender as he was one of the worst players for Rangers, with his error ultimately costing the team at least a point.

The result at Rugby Park also saw Philippe Clement’s side squander their chance to reduce the gap with Celtic and Aberdeen, who played out a 2-2 draw at Parkhead on Saturday (19 October).

Rangers now sit six points behind those two just eight games into the season and the likes of Souttar must be at the top of their game to ensure the team does not drop further points.

The Light Blues will have a chance to bounce back when they face FCSB at home in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (24 October).

They will be at Ibrox again on Sunday (27 October) when they lock horns with St. Mirren.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has insisted that the Light Blues should have hired this manager when they had the chance.
