Philippe Clement drops Ridvan Yilmaz injury update ahead of Rangers clash v Lyon

Philippe Clement has confirmed that Ridvan Yilmaz will miss Rangers’ Europa League showdown with Lyon through injury.

The Light Blues welcome the French giants to Ibrox for their second match of the new-look group stage of the competition on Thursday (3 October) having beaten Malmo in their opening game last week.

Although both Yilmaz and Mohamed Diomande have managed to return to first-team training in the build-up to the showdown with Lyon, Clement has revealed only the midfielder will be ready to feature at Ibrox.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday (2 October) Clement said: “Diomande will be back in the squad for tomorrow, Ridvan is back in training but will not be available.”

Who do Rangers play next in the Europa League at Ibrox?

It isn’t an overreaction to suggest that this game could well be the biggest test that the Gers have faced this season, outside of their showdown with Celtic at Parkhead in the first Old Firm tie of the campaign.

Lyon may not have started their domestic season in excellent fashion, but they are an excellent side who will be more than capable of causing the Gers problems. Clement has to learn from Celtic’s mistakes against Borussia Dortmund.

While the Light Blues will of course have the license to attack given the fact that they are the home side, they will know that they will have to be at their best out of possession to have any hopes of keeping Lyon quiet.

Hopefully, with key players back fit and available and momentum behind the side after wins over Hibernian and Malmo, Rangers will be able to pick up another three points and boost their chances of qualifying for the round of 16.
