Steven Thompson was far from impressed by Cyriel Dessers after the Rangers striker spurned another chance to score against Malmo on Thursday (26 September).

The forward was frustrated during the first half of the Europa League tie, smacking the post in the first minute before new signing Nedim Bajrami followed up the strike, and he clearly left his shooting boots at home.

Dessers had the chance to put the game out of sight for the Swedish outfit, bearing down on goal with just goalkeeper Johan Dahlin to beat, but blazed his effort straight over the crossbar.

Speaking live via BBC Sportsound on Thursday (26 September, 7:18pm), Thompson said: "I don't know how he's managed to put that where he's put it. It's such a good chance.

"I think he's tried to lift it, which is the right decision, but he's put it over the bar. It's a terrible finish."

Cyriel Dessers faces criticism despite Rangers win v Malmo

Dessers' accuracy has often been a problem, being slated every week by the fans despite notching 22 goals in his opening campaign with the Gers.

The 23-year-old has already hit the back of the net on seven occasions in all competitions so far this season, but questions over his ability in the final third remain.

Fans have certainly turned a corner when it comes to the striker, who has been compared to Marmite before, but he will definitely be frustrated by his lack of accuracy in the Europa League.

Goals from Bajrami and Ross McCausland meant Dessers' misses in front of goal were not as crucial for the Gers, but on another day and against a better team, it could have been a very different story.

With Danilo and Rabbi Matondo still sidelined, Philippe Clement does not have much choice about who plays the leading role in his starting XI, but it is unlikely he'd drop Dessers even if he did.
