Cyriel Dessers faces the risk of being axed at Rangers in favour of Hamza Igamane, journalist John McGarry has said.

Writing for the Scottish Daily Mail (16 September, page 66), McGarry described Dessers as "underwhelming" during the Gers' 1-0 victory at Dundee United on Sunday (15 September).

However, he was enthused by the performance of Igamane off the bench and thinks the Moroccon is primed for a start in the coming weeks.

"The positives came by the way of a bright run out from Oscar Cortes and a lively appearance from the bench for Hamza Igamane," McGarry wrote.

"The skilful Moroccan might well be displacing the underwhelming Dessers in the coming weeks."

Hamza Igamane making the right noises at Rangers

There does seem to be a general pattern that when things are not going particularly well for Rangers that Dessers becomes the immediate scapegoat.

Sometimes the criticism is justified but on other occasions it does feel a bit like Dessers is the easy target and is targeted for criticism regardless of the circumstances.

But, what Dessers cannot escape is the fact that Igamane has shown in his two cameo appearances off the bench that he has plenty of raw ability.

Signed for £1.7million from Moroccon outfit FAR Rabat in the summer transfer window, the 21-year-old has been introduced slowly into the fold thus far by Philippe Clement.

The forward has shown glimpses of what he can offer in a Rangers shirt and if he continues to impress then there is no doubt he'll get an opportunity to start.

Whether that is in place of Dessers or alongside him remains to be seen, but he certainly looks like he could be a talent worth investing time in.
