John Gilligan priority emerges at Rangers after new Ibrox developments

Rangers and interim chairman John Gilligan are prioritising the appointment of a new CEO to replace James Bisgrove, according to Chris Jack.

Writing in The Rangers Review (17 September), Jack reported that following John Bennett’s resignation at Ibrox, Gilligan is continuing the CEO search with a recruitment agency now enlisted.

That agency is helping the hunt for both a new chairman and CEO at Ibrox, the latter of which is still to be filled months after Bisgrove exited the club in May.

The Light Blues had sought to appoint St. Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie to address the now long-term vacancy, but talks collapsed last week despite the Buddies’ chief being a frontrunner [Daily Mail, 11 September].

Rangers make new priority at Ibrox

If a club without a CEO wasn’t already rudderless, then one without a full-time chairman too certainly is, with the Ibrox boardroom seemingly getting smaller as the weeks go by.

With Gilligan keen to address this after stepping into the breach left by Bennett though, it seems as if things could finally be on the up, particularly with a recruitment agency involved.

James Bisgrove Rangers
James Bisgrove exited Rangers for a move to the Saudi Pro League in May 2024.

An external company assisting with the club’s appointments is devolved from the partisan arguments which debate whether candidates “get” the club or not, and is unlikely to be fuelled by emotion.

As a result, the CEO appointment – if and when it finally occurs – could prove to be one which can help take the club forward, rather than going in circles as the board has in recent months [Stevie Clifford, 6 September].

There is plenty of trust to be rebuilt for whoever comes in to replace both Bisgrove and Bennett long-term, but Gers fans will hope the latest update is a starting point on the road to recovery.
