BBC Sport pundit makes ‘pivotal’ Rangers admission after win v Dundee United
Billy Dodds has admitted that Rangers’ clash with Dundee United will be “pivotal” in the story of Philippe Clement’s side’s season.
The Gers got back to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership with a 1-0 win over Jim Goodwin’s side on Sunday (15 September) as Tom Lawrence’s first-half strike was the only thing to separate the sides.
Although the Light Blues impressed in patches during the game, BBC Sport pundit Dodds admits he expected the home side to try and take advantage of Rangers’ poor start to the season.
BBC Sportscene on Sunday (16 September, 21:30) he said: “I think Jim and he admitted it post-match that he was kicking himself for not having more of a go.
“Maybe with Rangers where they were, it was such a big game, a pivotal game this early on in the season and where they were mentally after the Old Firm and maybe he could have had a bit more of a go.
“I can understand that, he’s had results by playing in that counter attack as I said and Rangers took advantage of that.”
Rangers win v Dundee United ‘pivotal’ after Ibrox developments
It isn’t an overstatement to suggest that Sunday afternoon’s game will be pivotal in the Gers’ season, especially after the disappointing Old Firm defeat to Celtic at Parkhead just before the international break.
The pressure would have been immediately on both Clement and his side had the Light Blues dropped more points at Tannadice, as another defeat would have all but ended the Gers’ hopes of winning the title.

Although Goodwin’s side did make it far too easy for the Light Blues to break them down, Clement’s Gers flexed their attacking muscles and on another day could have comfortably claimed all three points with a 2-0 or 3-0 win.
It would be naive of Rangers supporters to assume that everything is rosy both off and on the pitch after one win, but the victory at Tannadice has put the Gers in a position to put a good run of form together after the international break.
