Rangers should have made more behind-the-scenes sackings as Ibrox saga takes new twist

Daily Record journalist Scott McDermott believes there should have been “more than one” sacking at Rangers as the ongoing Ibrox debacle continues.

Near the start of the summer, the project manager for the refurbishment was sacked [Scottish Sun, 20 June] after it was announced that the Gers wouldn’t play their opening games at Ibrox.

The Gers have, however, finally been told that they will return home for their League Cup quarter-final tie against Dundee but Keith Jackson has since reported that there’s still a distinct possibility that the Gers return to Hampden after that game.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (4 September) McDermott said: “What an absolute shambles, this obviously goes back to the start of the season with the renovation works that Rangers were getting done.

“[The board] should have never allowed this to happen, this situation should have never been allowed to develop.

“I know at the time Rangers were quick to say somebody has lost their job over it but my god, I think more than one person should have lost their job over it.”

Rangers need to finalise their full return to Ibrox as soon as possible

The Gers have had a torrid start to their 2024/25 campaign. The club currently finds themselves fourth in the Scottish Premiership, five points adrift of league leaders, Aberdeen.

Philippe Clement’s men have also found themselves out of the Champions League which has resulted in them taking a massive financial hit despite qualifying for the Europa League.

One of the reasons behind the Gers’ poor run of form could be the fact that the club don’t have the Ibrox atmosphere to help boost the team when it’s needed the most.

In addition to the atmosphere, the fact that only one or two of Clement’s summer transfers have made an impact on the squad so far is also a cause for concern.

Indeed, Hampden Park is still full of the Rangers faithful but nothing can quite compare to the atmosphere that gets created at the Gers’ home ground.

The Copland Road stand refurbishment [Four Lads Had a Dream, 3 September] needs to come to an end as soon as possible or things could quickly go from bad to worse for the Glasgow-based outfit.
