Ally McCoist shares Rangers to Premier League verdict live on radio

Ally McCoist believes Rangers “should be looking” at joining the English Football League (EFL) but admitted it would be unfair to go straight into the Premier League.

The Old Firm clubs have been continuously linked with leaving the Scottish Premiership to move across the border, entering anywhere between the Premier League or the National League.

Welsh sides Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County and Wrexham all compete throughout the EFL, and many have called for the Old Firm duo to leave Scotland.

When asked whether the two sides should consider the proposition live via talkSPORT on Tuesday (3 September, 7:27am), McCoist replied: “Of course, they should be looking. There’s no doubt that they should be looking.

“Whether it happens or not, I don’t know. It seems we’ve been speaking about this for a long time.”

Jeff Stelling then quizzed him on which division they would enter, to which McCoist said: “It would have to be at the bottom. In terms of fairness, it would have to be the bottom.

“It’s not the National League, maybe the second division. I’ve not had a lot of time to think about it. It’s probably not going to happen. But in terms of fairness, they can’t just go straight into the Premier League.”

Rangers and Celtic to join the Premier League?

While it would be a very interesting experiment to see how the two Scottish giants would fair in England, it seems highly unlikely that it would ever happen.

Both Cardiff and Swansea joined the English divisions in 1920, over a century ago. Football has changed immensely since then, but some fans are still calling for a change at Ibrox.

There is no doubt that being in the EFL allows clubs more opportunity to make money, which has become somewhat of a problem throughout Scotland.

Brendan Rodgers’ side splashed the cash during the summer transfer window while Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen worked with a shoestring budget, searching for smart alternatives.

It remains to be seen whether Rangers and Celtic will ever make the switch to England but it would certainly be an interesting experiment, whichever league they joined to start with.
