Todd Cantwell torn into live on air as Rangers say ‘good riddance’ after Blackburn transfer
Rangers will have been happy to say “good riddance” to Todd Cantwell after his last-minute transfer to Blackburn Rovers, according to Mark Guidi.
The English midfielder ended his 18-month spell in Glasgow on transfer deadline day as he completed a reported £500,000 move to the Championship with Blackburn Rovers having submitted a transfer request [Alan Nixon, 28 August].
Although some pundits and supporters have suggested that the Gers should have held out for a larger transfer fee, the Sunday Mail’sGuidi has torn into the midfielder and suggested they should just be happy to have him out of Ibrox.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (30 August, 15:45) he said: “To be honest, I think it will be good riddance from Rangers.
“Absolutely good riddance. Tell me the number of games where he’s taken the game by the scruff of the neck and inspired Rangers in games where it really mattered. I can’t really think of any to be perfectly honest.
“The other thing is A when it is so public that the player wants to leave and B the club have banished him with the youth or the reserves or whatever, then right away your bargaining position in the market takes a dive.”
How much did Rangers get for Todd Cantwell transfer?
Cantwell is undoubtedly worth more than the £500,000 that the Gers received for his signature, but the Light Blues’ bargaining position was lost as soon as Clement confirmed that he had asked to leave Glasgow this summer.
Ultimately, Rangers will have just been happy to get his wage off of their books in the long run. They have missed out on a big transfer fee, but they will have saved plenty of money by offloading him to the Championship on deadline day.
As Guidi suggests, the midfielder drifted through matches far too often at Ibrox and while he was capable of moments of magic, they were incredibly few and far between and almost never in the biggest matches.

Hopefully, the players that have been signed to replace the outgoing Englishman will prove to be more successful in a Rangers shirt.
If they’re not, some sections of the support will likely suggest that more should have been done to keep Cantwell in Glasgow beyond the end of August.
