Rangers bank higher Todd Cantwell fee after Deadline Day transfer exit to Blackburn Rovers

Todd Cantwell may have brought in more money to Rangers than reported on Deadline Day with his transfer to Blackburn, according to The 4th Official.

Gary Morris reported on the outlet’s YouTube channel on 31 August that the Englishman’s fee could be as high as £650,000 after he got the move away he had asked for this summer.

A price of £500,000 had been reported by the Daily Record (29 August) and The Athletic (30 August), as the 26-year-old was one of two attackers to make permanent exits to England with Scott Wright joining Birmingham City.

The Gers bought Sassuolo’s Nedim Bajrami for £3.4million as an attacking replacement [Sky Sports, 30 August].

Whether it is the higher or the lower fee it is clearly far less than anyone would have expected Cantwell to leave Ibrox for even a few months ago.

His transfer request and subsequent lack of involvement in any games for the senior side or the B Team made it imperative that the Light Blues offloaded him somewhere as anger grew among the fanbase.

Selling a player for less than £1m after 18 months when he had looked like one of the team’s top stars a year ago is no reason to celebrate but would have been a relief to Philippe Clement.

Cantwell has taken to Instagram (31 August) in the wake of his exit to deny he ever refused to play, but there looked to be no way back for him all the same.

Bajrami was seen as the priority signing going into Deadline Day with a loan move on the cards [Daily Record, 29 August], so a multimillion pound permanent transfer was a surprise.

Clement will have to hope he has a major impact on the Gers attack after going without a senior striker signing before the window closed.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have found themselves stuck with an expensive player who can’t handle Scottish football having “missed a trick” to sell him when there was interest before the deadline.
