Rangers in last-ditch bid to sign Josip Brekalo as Fiorentina freeze him out

Rangers are in a last-ditch bid to sign Josip Brekalo from Fiorentina after he was made “surplus to requirements” in Florence, according to TutoMercatoWeb.

The Italian news website reported on Thursday (29 August) that Brekalo, 26, is no longer in Fiorentina’s plans after being an unused substitute in their first three games of the new season.

It is understood that Rangers are facing competition from Venezia for the Croatian winger’s signature but it “remains to be seen” if anything will happen before the transfer window closes on Friday night (30 August).

TMW adds that a decision will be made on Brekalo’s future if negotiations go well in the final hours of the summer window.

Rangers in last-gasp hunt to sign Croatia international Josip Brekalo

Brekalo would be an interesting signing for Rangers.

He’s been around for quite a while so you would presume that he’s older than the age of 26.

The former Wolfsburg winger has cover 120 appearances to his name in the Bundesliga and has played 49 times in Serie A for Fiorentina.

He’s also earned 35 caps for Croatia so this is a player who definitely has good pedigree.

However, for one reason or another, it’s not working out for him in Florence with Fiorentina and that could be good news for Rangers.

Phillipe Clement needs to do some more business before the transfer window shuts if he has any hope of being able to keep up with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race this season.

Brekalo seems a good player but would he be a game-changer in the title race?

We’ll only know for sure if the Gers follow up on their interest by sealing a deal.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are going to have to give up some of the money they’re set to pocket from Todd Cantwell’s return to England.
