Norwich City have Todd Cantwell sell-on clause as Rangers deal edges closer

Todd Cantwell’s transfer from Rangers to Blackburn Rovers will be affected by a sell-on clause owed to Norwich City, according to Football Scotland.

Football Scotland reported on 28 August that Norwich City inserted a sell-on clause in Cantwell’s initial transfer to Ibrox 18 months ago, with the percentage dependent on his achievements with the Gers.

Blackburn Rovers are reportedly on the brink of agreeing a £500,000 fee with the Light Blues to seal Cantwell’s exit from Ibrox [Alan Nixon, 28 August], following his sidelining by Philippe Clement in the wake of a transfer request.

However, a small portion of that six-figure fee looks set to end up in the coffers of Norwich due to their sell-on clause in Cantwell’s contract, though it’s unclear exactly how much this will prove to be.

Rangers won’t mind sell-on fee with Todd Cantwell transfer close

In the wake of the transfer request submitted by Cantwell in the opening weeks of the window, one of Clement’s main goals has been to ensure that the Englishman finds a new club before 30 August.

Movement had been lacking on that front until recent weeks, with Blackburn’s late interest being a late boost in the Belgian’s bid to bring in possible replacements for the out-of-favour number 10.

Although a six-figure fee is a significant downgrade on the reported £1.5million-plus paid to Norwich in January 2023 [The Sun], Cantwell’s transfer stance necessitated accepting whatever offer came the Gers’ way.

Paying a small amount of that fee back to the midfielder’s hometown club may restrict Clement’s ability to sign a new face in the number 10 role, but any replacement at this stage would be seen as an upgrade.

The Ibrox faithful and other Bears fans around the world will see this transfer as one that simply had to happen regardless of cost, and Clement will be glad that Cantwell is about to be Blackburn’s problem.
