Rangers chiefs react to takeover rumours after latest developments

Rangers chiefs were left “bemused” by rumours of a potential takeover, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported on its website on 28 August that the news of potential American investment came as a “surprise” to John Bennett.

Dave King has already shot down the rumours and shown support for Bennett despite his already turbulent spell in charge at Ibrox.

Takeover news emerges at Rangers

Although these latest rumours about new investment in Rangers have now been shot down, it’s evident that something needs to change at the club.

Philippe Clement has had to sell-to-buy across the transfer window and has added many players to his ranks with two more days to go.

However, despite the likes of former FC Twente captain Robin Propper [Rangers Review, 7 August] and Moroccan starlet Hamza Igamane [Daily Record, 6 July] being added to the ranks, the club is still in dire need of further reinforcement.

And, without this further investment into his squad, it’s unlikely that Clement will be able to put up a proper challenge against Celtic.

Rangers are one of the biggest clubs in Scottish football and the fact that they have to sell some of their ‘dead weight’ before bringing any further players in shouldn’t be the case.

Todd Cantwell is edging closer to the exit door [Daily Record, 28 August] after he handed in his transfer request but it might not make much of a difference to Clement’s squad as the fee agreed is said to be low.

Only time will tell what Rangers will do come the end of the season but, one thing is for sure, without further reinforcement, it’s unlikely that the club will be able to put up much of a fight for the title.

In other Rangers news, Jack Butland’s representatives have shared a new transfer update ahead of the 30 August deadline.
