Rangers to reverse Todd Cantwell transfer exit decision as a last resort

Rangers should only look to reintegrate Todd Cantwell into the squad if they cannot find an exit route for him before Friday’s transfer deadline day, Andy Newport has said.

The attacking midfielder dropped a bombshell earlier this summer by handing in a transfer request at Ibrox but has yet to find a move despite links to Trabzonspor earlier this month (Karadeniz Gazete).

If leaves the prospect of the Gers having Cantwell the 26-year-old still on the books after August 30 but Daily Record journalist Newport says it should only be a “last resort” to keep him part of the squad.

Writing for the Record’s ‘Monday Jury’ section, Newport opined: “Only as a last resort. Cantwell has made clear he’s no longer committed to the Ibrox cause and given how inconsistent he was before taking the sulk, you have to worry what his effort levels would look like now. It’s best for all concerned if he goes now.”

No way back for Todd Cantwell at Rangers

Cantwell was a polarising figure at Ibrox even before he decided to throw things into chaos by chucking in a transfer request at the club.

Capable of being brilliant on his day but equally capable of being extremely frustrating and often Cantwell does his talking on social media rather than on the pitch.

There is a general feeling too that Cantwell goes missing in the big games and at a time when Philippe Clement is trying to shift the mentality at the club, they would be better off trying to get Cantwell off the books and finding a suitable replacement.

Doing that is proving easier said that done, of course, and there appears little in the way of a concrete exit route for the former Norwich CIty man.

But bridges have been burned with supporters now and it feels hard to see any way back for Cantwell, they need to do what they can to facilitate an exit in the coming days.
