SPFL breaks silence on away allocation row between Rangers and Celtic

The SPFL has spoken out with a statement on the ongoing away fan ticket allocation spat between Rangers and Celtic.

As published in the Daily Record [16 August], the league governing body is hopeful that the situation can be resolved and away supporters will be allowed into each club’s respective ground for future Old Firm derbies.

The controversy stems from Celtic’s call to U-turn on allowing Rangers to fulfil a 2,500 allocation at Parkhead on 1 September, a little over two weeks away from the clash; the Gers have reciprocated the decision, with no visiting fans now allowed into Ibrox for the next league derby on 2 January.

The SPFL stated: “The presence of away fans is a vital ingredient of the passion, drama and excitement that is the hallmark of the William Hill Premiership.

“We are pleased that Rangers and Celtic are committed to achieving the return of away supporters to their derby matches as soon as possible.”

Pundits fume over Rangers and Celtic situation

The SPFL statement is vague, that has to be said. There is a door left ajar – no guarantee that anything will change to prevent a second full season of away lockouts for Old Firm derby fixtures.

Pundits across TV and radio have made their feelings known – including Alan Brazil and Simon Jordan.

Brazil made his feelings known live on talkSPORT on Thursday [15 August], claiming it “really annoys” him that the atmosphere takes a significant blow in the wake of the decision – the former Scotland forward then reinforced that when talking on air with Ray Parlour the following morning.

Ibrox

Jordan, again live on talkSPORT [15 August], called on the SPFL to put their foot down and handle repercussions for the clubs themselves should they not comply with league rules following police safety checks.

It’s difficult to envisage a timeline to when this will change, but the sacrifice of a major element of the Old Firm atmosphere puts the derby in danger of a blemish on the positive side of its fierce reputation.
