Rangers suffering reality check with summer business as transfer trend to continue
Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers will need to continue to sell players before they can buy before the August 30 transfer deadline.
Philippe Clement shared earlier this summer that the club would have to sell members of their squad to buy, something witnessed first-hand when Conor Goldson was shipped out to be replaced by Robin Propper.
Finance expert Plumley said that is likely to be the case pretty much every summer for the club, especially given so much of their plans are reliant on qualifying for European football.
The Gers are aiming to progress in the Champions League in the second leg of their third-round qualifying tie with Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday (13 August) but Plumley said the sell-to-buy model will not go away anytime soon.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, he said: “I would suggest so (sell-to-buy will continue) yes.
“Because obviously Champions League qualification is going to be the swing and that’s not guaranteed as we’re talking right now, and again that’s always kind of the case year to year with Rangers.
“They’ve got challenges within the infrastructure of Scottish football and growing within that, it’s always going to come down to Champions League or Europa League or not, and in the interim while that situation gets decided every August you’re likely to see this in-and-out movement.
“That’s through no fault of Rangers that’s the reality of where they’re at in their own market also in the wider European market with transfers in and out.”
Rangers in clear need of Champions League boost
Clement and Nils Koppen have been busy at work trying to overhaul the Gers’ squad this summer but, with just over two weeks remaining, there are still pieces they will want to work on.
The issue, as Plumley rightly points out, is that there isn’t just a blank chequebook to play with at Ibrox and ultimately if they want to bring more faces in some will inevitably have to move out.

What would definitely improve their chances of signing new players is progressing in the Champions League, though, and making the competition proper would be an even greater boost.
But, even if that happens, in 12 months we’re likely to be here all over again with the Gers funding any signings with player sales. That’s just the reality of the situation right now.
