Ianis Hagi transfer update at Rangers emerges after baffling news

Rangers are “chiselling away” at Ianis Hagi’s transfer value by making him surplus to requirements at Ibrox, according to Keith Jackson.

Speaking on Daily Record Sport’s Hotline (11 August), Jackson was “beyond baffled” at the club’s stance of dropping Hagi to the B team while also making him available for transfer.

Hagi played more often at EURO 2024 than any other Premiership player, and Jackson believes the Gers are limiting the potential of getting a strong fee for the Romanian with their actions.

He said: “(Hagi) is the epitome of a sellable asset, and yet Rangers, by throwing him into the B team, by saying he’s not good enough to get into that starting XI, they’re actually chiselling away whatever fee you might hope to achieve from his sale.

“I’m beyond baffled by it, and I can’t really fathom any argument that would make me understand, for the time being, as long as he is a Rangers player, why he’s not part of that dressing room.

“They were talking about a fee of around £3million from Fiorentina.

“The longer the window goes on and the less game time he sees, the fact he’s just been farmed into the B team, If I’m Fiorentina, I’d be saying; ‘why do you expect me to pay £3m for a player you don’t think is good enough for your first team?’ – it’s crazy.”

Ianis Hagi transfer to happen at Rangers

Hagi is one of the few players currently on the books at Ibrox who there seems to be absolutely no way back for, with Philippe Clement seemingly having no place for him at present or going forward [Fanatik, 23 May].

Even Todd Cantwell, who has been roughly slammed for handing in transfer requests [Gary Keown, 11 August], has seen the door left slightly ajar by Clement after his inconsistent performances last season.

However, Hagi has been afforded no such luxury, and with a move now the clearest and best option for both parties, the Gers should be doing all they can to maximise the 25-year-old midfielder’s value.

With a Scottish Premiership title under his belt and a last name renowned across European football, the Light Blues certainly wouldn’t be short of suitors for Hagi, even after an uninspiring loan to Alaves in La Liga [Razvan Plesca, 28 May].

Negotiating a transfer with Fiorentina or another club will only be complicated by the Romanian’s status in Clement’s reserves – if the Belgian isn’t willing to take a chance on Hagi, why should any other club?

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues could be set for an instant £4million windfall if they win a crucial match in the coming days.
