John Bennett prepares Rangers support for ‘pain’ after Philippe Clement update
Rangers chief John Bennett is preparing the Rangers support for “pain” this season after recent developments at Ibrox this summer.
Philippe Clement has not been afforded loads of money to revamp his squad ahead of the transfer deadline, while issues at Ibrox have ensured that the Gers will be playing at Hampden Park for the foreseeable future.
The Light Blues have also handed Clement a new deal to keep him in Glasgow and Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Guidi believes that decision shows the fanbase that they are going to have to be patient in the coming months.
Speaking on The Go Radio Show on Monday (5 August, 12:50) he said: “I said it last week or the week before, John Bennett’s statement is preparing the Rangers support for pain and telling them to be patient.
“You can’t keep sacking the manager because Giovanni van Bronckhorst was a good manager, Michael Beale I’m not so sure about, Clement is a good manager so it’s not all about the manager.
“It’s the tools they’re given to work with, they’re having to downsize so nobody has got a magic wand at their hand.
The unfortunate thing for Rangers, their manager, their supporters and their board is that Celtic have got tens and tens of millions in the bank. They’ve got a first-class manager who has worked with the team, has a good harmony going and has winners in it.”
Will Philippe Clement exit Rangers after Ibrox developments?
While the decision to hand Clement a new contract will have come as a total shock to everyone involved at Rangers this summer, it is an indication from the board that they want some sort of stability at the club.
Everyone would have hoped to see the Light Blues make more progress in the summer transfer window, but that was always unlikely to happen because of the financial situation the Gers found themselves in compared to their Old Firm rivals.
As Guidi suggests, the Light Blues are up against both off and on the field. That can change over time if the club is run in the right way and Bennett and the rest of the Ibrox board clearly believe Clement is the man for that task.
Hopefully, that will prove to be a masterstroke from the board and the Belgian will help turn Rangers back into a genuine competitive force at the top of the Premiership table.
However, supporters are going to have to prepare for some “pain” and suffering over the foreseeable future as the issues engrained in the club run far deeper than the surface.
