Joan Jordan clings to Sevilla contract after new Rangers transfer decision

Rangers target Joan Jordan has clung to the “juicy” contract given to him by Sevilla after rejecting a move to Ibrox, according to Jose Manuel Garcia.

The Spanish football writer posted on X (29 July) that Jordan snubbed the Gers despite “advantageous conditions” for both the player and his club, as well as the potential offer of Champions League football.

Despite playing just 13 times in all competitions last season – described as “inactive” by Garcia – Jordan has instead chosen to remain at Sevilla due to his “juicy” contract, which runs until 2027.

Garcia’s post acknowledged that while Jordan moving to Ibrox on loan would have repaid the generosity shown to him by Sevilla, he has not returned the favour, and the digging in of his heels is a “bad thing”.e

Rangers forced to look elsewhere in Joan Jordan transfer pursuit

Had the Gers managed to seal the deal with Sevilla and Jordan over a loan or permanent move – the former having reportedly been close [Fernando Serrano, 27 July] – it would have been one of the statement signings of the summer.

Despite currently being out-of-favour in Seville, Jordan is still a multiple Europa League winner and bringing that kind of experience to Ibrox is exactly what Philippe Clement wants to do this summer.

The Gers’ own run to the Europa League final in 2022 was done so with John Lundstram and Ryan Jack running the middle of the park, but both players departed this summer at the end of their contracts.

As such, there’s a sizeable hole to fill in midfield, and despite the arrival of Connor Barron, the Gers need much more than a 21-year-old free transfer from Aberdeen if they’re to challenge Celtic.

Jordan would have ticked plenty of boxes in that regard, but given he’s snubbed the move to Ibrox, the transfer rumour mill will soon spark up again over who is set to become Clement’s new midfield lynchpin.

In other Rangers news, Four Lads listed seven players who could be sold by the club this summer as Clement’s rebuild continues.
