Chris Sutton makes Todd Cantwell exit admission after ‘extraordinary’ Rangers transfer request
Todd Cantwell was looking for a way out of Rangers during the January transfer window last season, according to Chris Sutton.
The Englishman’s time in Glasgow looks set to come to an end this summer after Philippe Clement revealed in a press conference he had requested to leave Ibrox and would be allowed to do so [Heart and Hand, 24 July].
While Sutton was shocked by the nature of Clement’s reveal, he admits he wasn’t surprised by Cantwell’s decision as he doesn’t think he has “the stomach” to play for an Old Firm side.
Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (27 July) he said: “It was extraordinary to see Philippe Clement finish his press conference the other night, only to come back in and reveal Cantwell has submitted a transfer request.
“I can’t say I’m surprised. I heard back in January he was looking for a way out and it doesn’t seem like he’s got the stomach or the temperament for the Glasgow goldfish bowl.
“His manager wasn’t having him either, but it’s a strange one. Normally when players talk about wanting a new challenge it’s because they have achieved so much as a club.
“Cantwell hasn’t achieved much at Rangers and what will he be remembered for? His shushburgers, social media posts and depriving Reo Hatate of a drink? He talked about a rivalry with Callum McGregor – but it ended up a non-contest.
“It’s not great and it’s a chance missed by Cantwell.”
Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer speculation?
As Sutton suggested, Cantwell’s transfer request won’t have come as a surprise to the majority of Rangers supporters as they would have expected the Englishman to depart Glasgow ahead of the new season.
The 26-year-old had another underwhelming campaign last time out and there was plenty of speculation around his relationship with Clement and whether or not the Belgian was keen on keeping him in the fold.

However, it is a bit of a surprise to hear Cantwell has supposedly been looking for a way out over the last six months or so given he spent the entirety of last season claiming he was committed to being a success in light blue.
Hopefully, the Gers will at least be able to pocket a good fee for his services before the summer transfer window slams shut.
That way, the money can be reinvested back into Clement’s squad ahead of the new campaign to try and close the gap to Celtic at the top of the league.
