Philippe Clement’s immediate future could soon be under threat at Rangers

Hugh Keevins believes Philippe Clement’s future could be threatened if Rangers don’t make the Champions League group stage.

The Light Blues will learn who they will face in the Champions League qualification round on Monday (22 July).

With this clash on the horizon, the Belgian boss has made four new signings with further additions wanted to prepare for European competition.

Keevins, writing for the Sunday Mail on 21 July (page 57), has suggested that Clement’s Ibrox future could be on the line if the result doesn’t go his way.

He said: “The need to make the group stage and achieve the equivalent of winning the National Lottery is, on the other hand, undeniable.

“Failure would impact on the rest of Rangers’ domestic season and, by association, Phil’s (Clement) immediate future.”

Philippe Clement Rangers under threat

There is no doubt that the season ended in frustrating circumstances, losing out to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup to Celtic.

This was nothing new for Gers fans who have gotten used to playing second fiddle to their Old Firm rivals over the years.

Clement has been handed the responsibility to change this and alter Rangers’ fate in the title race moving forward.

The 50-year-old has been handed the task of rebuilding the squad at Ibrox before it is even possible to challenge Brendan Rogers’ side.

The likes of Connor Barron and Hamza Igamane have already come through the doors but really aren’t going to propel the Light Blues to a league title.

Selling some key stars for a positive fee could be something that Clement is forced into with James Tavernier being linked with a move away.

With the Champions League qualifiers coming up, the Belgian needs to sort his side out and do it quickly and successfully.
