Reuell Walters update emerges as Rangers eye defender after Arsenal exit confirmed

Rangers will face competition from England and Europe if they decide to move or Reuell Walters, according to the Daily Record.

The outlet reported via their website on 1 July (3.02pm), after the right-back’s release by Arsenal was confirmed, that he has a “string of interest” south of the border and on the continent, while the Light Blues like him.

It would require a compensation fee of around £350,000 if they did move to sign him and the Record previously reported (4 June) the club weren’t minded to do so unless a player leaves in that position.

But with James Tavernier’s potential departure subject to plenty of speculation the captain leaving “would present a potential opportunity to strike a deal” for Walters, 19.

James Tavernier exit could lead Rangers to push for Reuell Walters

If Philippe Clement wants a new right-back then the chance is now there for him to push for Walters but if there is extensive rival interest it the opportunity likely won’t last long.

Dujon Sterling may be in line to fill the shoes of Tavernier if the captain leaves [Rangers Review, 17 June] after extensive links to Saudi Arabia over the past year.

But it appears the Gers were actively pursuing a potential deal for now-Ipswich full-back Ben Johnson before he left West Ham this summer, only to be priced out of the race by his wages [The Athletic, 1 July].

Walters, without a senior appearance at Arsenal, will surely not be asking for as much so if Clement likes him then it looks like now is the time to take action.

James Tavernier

It remains to be seen whether a Tavernier deal will be worked out, although he has been said to have agreed personal terms already [The Gallant Few Podcast, 19 June], but waiting for the 32-year-old’s future to be resolved could see Walters snapped up elsewhere.

Having missed out on Johnson it would be a double-disappointment to also see the teenager head elsewhere, especially if Rangers are left looking for a signing at right-back later in the transfer window.
