Rangers to take Cyriel Dessers transfer risk amid transfer request update

Dan Bardell believes Rangers need to be careful before they sell Cyriel Dessers this summer as he could prove difficult to replace.

A report from Soccernet (25 June) has suggested that the Nigeria international has handed in a transfer request at Ibrox this summer.

This has seen Greek side PAOK show an interest in signing him [Novasports] with talks said to be ongoing.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “It’s always a risk letting a player go who has already proven that they can score goals and replacing them.

I don’t think Rangers can lose many more goals from their side but with Dessers leaving they would lose a large proportion. Signing a new forward, there’s no guarantee that it works out better than him.

Rangers have to be careful because goalscorers come at a premium and every club is looking for a number nine. The number nine market is harder than it’s probably ever been so it is a risk from Rangers.

If they bring someone new in they’ve got to get it right.

Rangers set to lose Cyriel Dessers

It was, to put it mildly, an extremely mixed bag for Dessers at Rangers during his debut campaign with regular criticism of his finishing ability negated at times by a decent goals return that saw him finish as the Light Blues’ top scorer in all competitions.

In his debut season in Scotland, he registered 22 goals and nine assists across all competitions but there is a feeling that with the quality of chances he had that former stat could have been much higher.

But, as it stands, it looks as though an exit from Ibrox is very much on the cards with the 29-year-old clearly seeing his future lying away from Glasgow.

This will leave Danilo as the main striker at the club despite spending the majority of last campaign injured after signing.

Cyriel Dessers
Cyriel Dessers has scored 22 goals in all competitions during his first season at Rangers.

Rumours that the Gers may add Lawrence Shankland to their squad this summer are unlikely to die down and there is no doubt he would be a great replacement for Philippe Clement.

But there must be a plan in place in terms of transfers for Rangers to be letting Dessers go this summer.
