Rangers lead race to sign Connor Barron as Aberdeen ace could fly in for medical
Rangers are leading the race to sign Connor Barron from Aberdeen as they are set to step up attempts to land him, according to the Scottish Sun.
The paper reported via their website on 12 June that the Scottish midfielder is still wanted by clubs in Italy and England as well but the Light Blues are at the “front of the queue” to bring him to Ibrox this summer.
Barron, 21, has been on holiday in Portugal but could reportedly fly back for a medical and contract talks with the club.
He is out of contract at Pittodrie although the Dons would be entitled to compensation if Rangers complete a deal.
Philippe Clement to land Ryan Jack replacement for Rangers?
The Rangers midfield has just lost both John Lundstram and Ryan Jack as their contracts expired so there is a clear need for reinforcements at the position.
Barron might not be the answer on his own but there is certainly some logic to picking up a young domestic talent who has already proven his ability in the Scottish Premiership, after he was nominated for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award in the top flight last term [BBC Sport, 8 May].
Although he would require a compensation fee it would likely be some way below what it might take to buy a player of his profile, while the potential re-sale value down the line could be substantial.
And if Philippe Clement is able to overcome competition from England and Italy it would be a strong statement as he continues his summer overhaul.

The Belgian has already got off to a fast start with deals secured for left-back Jefte, centre-back Clinton Nsiala, and a return for Oscar Cortes, as well as a new contract for Leon Balogun.
There is plenty still to do, but Barron, who previously was seen as a difficult target thanks to the animosity between Rangers and Aberdeen, would arguably be the biggest move so far.
