Robby McCrorie rejects new Rangers contract with higher wages at Ibrox

Robby McCrorie has rejected a new contract at Rangers amid transfer interest from Aberdeen this summer, according to Daily Record.

The newspaper wrote via its website [4 June] that the Gers tabled a new long-term offer with “improved terms” but the 26-year-old shot-stopper has turned it down at Ibrox.

It is understood that he is unhappy with the amount of game time under Philippe Clement and looks to be entering the final year of his current with the Scottish giants.

McCrorie is, undoubtedly, a talented goalkeeper, and one that deserves more game time. With Jack Butland in goal, however, any more time on the pitch remains to be seen.

The ‘keeper has made just seven first-team appearances since June 2021 and has not played since last season, kept completely out of the side by the former Crystal Palace man.

There is currently a lot of speculation around Butland’s future at Ibrox, with multiple rumours linking him with a move back to the Premier League, though it may be too late to persuade McCrorie to stay.

It is clear that Clement is a fan of the goalkeeper and sees something in the backup, and his determination to become a first-choice shot-stopper cannot be faulted.

With the hope of also starting for Scotland on the international stage, it comes as no surprise to see McCrorie turn down a new deal if the club are unable to offer him promised minutes on the pitch.

Considering the number of competitions that the Gers will be competing in next season, it will be important that Clement has enough depth in his squad. If McCrorie is to leave this summer, that is another needed transfer.

If the goalkeeper chooses to see out his contract at Ibrox, leaving as a free transfer next summer, the club could miss out on a decent financial fee for the player.

In other Rangers news, Lawrence Shankland could be on his way to Ibrox this summer after developments at Hearts.
