Rangers transfer news as summer exit mooted for Cyriel Dessers after Philippe Clement update

Chris Jack has admitted he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Cyriel Dessers leaves Rangers during the summer transfer window.

The Nigerian has enjoyed a mixed first season at Ibrox, scoring 22 goals and laying on seven assists in all competitions, but being widely criticised by pundits and supports alike for his poor finishing and inconsistent displays.

Although there is an expectation that the Gers will be in the market for a number nine with Philippe Clement admitting he wants to make changes to his squad, Rangers Review journalist Jack believes the 29-year-old could make way.

Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (3 June, 29:25) he said: “Dessers if you just look at the numbers he is an asset, if you look at the performances people will have their opinions on him.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he moves on. There has to be investment in that forward area whether he is there or not. You’re looking for at least one new number nine to come in and a lot will be dependent on how Danilo is fitness-wise.”

Will Rangers sell Cyriel Dessers during the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

Dessers’ first season in a Rangers shirt couldn’t have been much more of a mixed bag. When the Nigerian was at his best, he pulled supporters onside with energetic and hardworking displays which were rewarded with goals.

But more often than not, he was the subject of criticism as he repeatedly missed big chances and cost his side with ineffective performances, particularly in Old Firm clashes with Celtic where he flattered to deceive.

In an ideal world, the 29-year-old would be kept in Glasgow for another season with Danilo and a new striker as the first-choice options. However, a new signing may not be possible without Dessers being sold this summer.

Should a reasonable bid be made to acquire the Nigerian, you would have to imagine Philippe Clement would be willing to let him leave Ibrox as long as the Belgian is able to sign a replacement with the incoming funds.
