Rangers to push for new transfers over Ibrox appointment already
Gordon Smith has told Rangers’ hierarchy to push ahead with business in the transfer window, rather than prioritising their search for a new CEO.
Speaking to The Daily Record, the Gers’ former director of football reacted to the departure of James Bisgrove, saying that the club can’t get distracted from Philippe Clement’s squad rebuild.
Bisgrove’s sudden move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah leaves the recruitment department somewhat depleted, despite over a dozen incomings and departures being expected this summer.
Smith said: “There’s a few people in Scotland who might make good candidates, but the main priority for the next few weeks isn’t hiring a CEO, it’s hiring the right players.
“Rangers need to get the recruitment right because over the last two years, I don’t think they’ve done that. They need to improve on that record and look at the positions which are key.
“Through the heart of this team, Rangers need players who can control games and compete at a higher level. It’s a big job.”
Bisgrove departure could cost Rangers in transfer market
Rangers cannot be blindsided by the sudden exit of Bisgrove, with a pivotal season on the horizon and crucial steps to take in the transfer market.
Clement’s overhaul of the squad is already beginning to take shape, with four veteran players departing having been unable to earn new deals, Leon Balogun penning a contract extension, and Jefte being confirmed as the first signing of the summer.
However, unless the Gers can find an interim or new CEO in the coming weeks, the recruitment department has one less senior figure in place, to assist with the identification of players and processing of transfers.
Jose Cordoba slipped through their fingers having seemed all but certain to sign, and although it’s still incredibly early in the summer, Clement will be hoping to avoid similar setbacks in the coming months.
An urgent replacement for Bisgrove may not be forthcoming, and although Rangers will be keen to press ahead with their transfer policy regardless, the pace of Clement’s squad rebuild could suffer as a result of the Ibrox boardroom being stretched.
