Philippe Clement wants Damian Garcia in new Rangers transfer push
Rangers are interested in signing Atletico Penarol midfielder Damian Garcia this summer, according to Daily Record.
The newspaper reported via its website [3 June] that the Uruguayan is joined by Godoy Cruz’s Thomas Galdames on Philippe Clement’s transfer radar ahead of the summer window.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder continues to impress, having scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Fenix in the Primera Division Apertura on Sunday 2 June, his first senior goal for the club.
Rangers to sign Penarol talent Damian Garcia?
Clement’s midfield will be an extremely important part of the squad heading into the summer transfer window, especially after the recently confirmed Ibrox exits.
Ryan Jack and John Lundstram have both parted ways with the Gers, leaving just Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande as the senior choices for the Belgian.
Despite Garcia’s lack of experience outside of Uruguay, the youngster looks to be an exciting talent, one that could thrive under Clement’s leadership at Ibrox.
With the lack of midfield choices currently available in Glasgow, the Gers must ensure they recruit intelligently and, importantly, for cheap fees until funds can be raised through player exits.
The club have already made their first signing in Fluminense’s Jefte, who will provide cover at left-back since Borna Barisic is another name to leave Ibrox this summer.
Rangers fans will need to prepare themselves for a squad overhaul in the coming months, with Clement wanting to make the squad ready to battle for the Scottish Premiership and European competition.
With 15 caps for Uruguay Under-20s, Garcia could add some much-needed cover in midfield, with so much anticipation building around his possible transfer already.
Despite not adding much height to either box, it is clear that Garcia is decent in the air and is a tough battler in the middle of the park, which will already make him a favourite at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, Lawrence Shankland could be on his way to Ibrox this summer after developments at Hearts.
