Rangers to accept ‘monster’ bid for Jack Butland, replacement lined up

Kenny Miller believes Rangers might need to accept an offer for Jack Butland this summer.

Writing in the Daily Record (2 June), the Sky Sports pundit stated that Philippe Clement will not want to lose Butland, but could be left with no choice.

“There could be bids for him this summer – there’s no getting away from that. And a monster offer might need to be accepted to fund Clement’s spending elsewhere.

“But if he had the choice he’d rather keep Butland and I think it’s imperative that he’s No.1 next season. It looks like Liam Kelly will be brought in from Motherwell as his back-up – and that’s another no-brainer for me.

“Liam has performed at a high level in the Premiership and before that at Livingston and QPR. He’s free, he’s Scottish and will push Butland all the way so it would be a clever signing for Rangers.”

Liam Kelly could replace Jack Butland at Rangers

Rangers might have to make some tough decisions this summer.

Butland is a top-quality shot-stopper, that is not a question.

He had a fantastic first season at Ibrox, and supporters will definitely not want to see him leave.

Unfortunately, the Gers need to be realistic.

If Clement’s side are to close the gap on Celtic next season then reinforcements will be needed, and if a big offer were to arrive for Butland, it might be wise for the club to accept that offer.

While he is an important player for the club, there are more important positions which need upgrading.

Rangers tend to dominate the majority of their matches, and the man between the sticks doesn’t necessarily need to be one of their top players.

Kelly is a proven Scottish Premiership goalkeeper who could certainly do a job.

Therefore, if the Gers could command a large fee for Butland which could be reinvested outfield, that would be the wise thing to do.
