John Bennett now under ‘serious scrutiny’ at Rangers after Ibrox development

Gary Keown has suggested that John Bennett is under added pressure as Rangers chairman after James Bisgrove departed Ibrox.

The Gers’ chief executive departed in a move to the Middle East in the past week which has seen Bennett stepping into the role.

This comes after over a year as chairman at Ibrox where the club have struggled to match Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

In his column for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (2 June, page 96), Keown has slammed his work as Rangers chairman.

He said: “He has most definitely put his money where his mouth is in bringing Rangers back from financial meltdown. He also has a strong reputation in his field.

“That doesn’t mean that you are any good at running a football club and right now his credentials for that particular job are under serious, serious scrutiny. Since becoming chairman, he has been unimpressive as he has been invisible.”

Rangers need a summer revolution

The departure of Bisgrove will see him depart for the Middle East in a surprising move away from Ibrox. The club have opted to use an interim set-up with Bennett stepping into the chief executive role.

This will see Rangers need either a new chief executive or a new chairman depending on which role Bennett stays in next year.

Offield issues with Bisgrove departing have just added some additional problems to a summer where the Light Blues were already set to struggle.

A frustrating season ended with Celtic beating Philippe Clement’s side to the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup at Hampden.

The summer transfer window will see plenty of stars depart who will need replacing in a market where funds aren’t free-flowing at Ibrox.

Rangers have to be clever this summer to get as much value for money as they can as they look to build a squad to challenge Celtic.

The issues now surrounding the club with Bisgrove and Bennett are just yet another distraction.
