David Edgar moots ‘crowdfund’ for new Rangers hire at Ibrox
David Edgar has jokingly urged Rangers to appoint Thomas Gronnemark as a throw-in specialist at Ibrox this summer.
The Gers are set for a summer of change, with club CEO James Bisgrove already announcing his exit from Ibrox and joining a football team in the Middle East.
Set-piece specialists are becoming much more popular at clubs across Europe, with managers hoping to take advantage of corners and free-kicks more often. Rangers could target a different set piece.
Replying to a post on X about Gronnemark on Saturday (1 June), Edgar wrote: “Rangers, please hire this guy one day a week. We’ll crowdfund it if need be. Can’t deal with another season of us giving the ball away instantly from 80% of our throws.”
Could Rangers begin their summer rebuild with a change in staff?
With Bisgrove stepping down from his duties, Philippe Clement, Nils Koppen and John Bennett have formed a team to help the Gers through the summer transfer window.
However, looking ahead to the 2024/25 campaign, there will be aspects of Rangers’ football that can be improved upon, and Edgar has already pointed one out.
Set-pieces are an extremely vital part of football, whether that’s anything from a goal kick to a throw-in. The latter is where the Ibrox faithful wants to start with, cutting out any mistakes with a simple throw.
Of course, it is likely just a joke and more of a plea for the squad to stop making simple errors on the football pitch that leads to a turnover in possession, which inevitably leads to counterattacks.
Clement will have a number of changes already planned for this summer, with the squad’s rebuild underway after a handful of players’ exits were confirmed and Jefte was signed from Fluminense.
While some may turn their nose up at the idea of Gronnemark coming to the club for such a simple task, he is the world’s leading expert when it comes to throw-ins and has worked with the likes of Liverpool, Ajax, Toulouse and Brentford.
If Rangers can afford to bring in someone like him to work with the squad, it could be worth it. Throw-ins could be one area where Clement could look make some marginal games in the race for the Scottish Premiership next season.
In other Rangers news, Lawrence Shankland could now be on his way to Ibrox after the latest development at Hearts.
