Alan Nixon transfer update on John Lundstram as destination shared after Rangers exit

Alan Nixon has revealed where John Lundstram will be playing his football next season after his Rangers exit was confirmed on Saturday (1 June).

The 30-year-old was one of a handful of confirmed departures this summer, joined by Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Jon McLaughlin and Kemar Roofe as an Ibrox rebuild begins.

Lundstram has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Ipswich Town said to be interested, though it seems a summer move to Trabzonspor in the Turkish League is much more likely. [Scottish Sun]

Responding via X to a question about the player’s destination on Saturday (1 June), Nixon simply said: “Turkey”.

John Lundstram set for Turkey as Rangers exit confirmed

Lundstram has been one of the standout players since arriving from Sheffield United on a free transfer in 2021, making 153 appearances in total for the Gers.

However, his Gers career has been tainted during the final few weeks of the Scottish Premiership season, having missed out on the league title to Old Firm rivals Celtic and losing the Scottish Cup final to the same opponents.

His red card in the must-win league match against the Hoops (11 May) – a match in which he also scored an own goal – was a turning point in the fixture and many conceded it was a sign that it was time to move on especially with multiple transfer links having already been mooted.

There is no doubt that Lundstram is a useful player, but his release from Ibrox has now been confirmed and it looks as though he is headed for the Turkish Super Lig.

Rumours surrounding Trabzonspor’s interest have been floating around for months and the Turkish club finally looks to have landed one of their top transfer targets after his Ibrox exit was confirmed.

It will certainly be a difficult task to fill the veteran’s gap in the first-team squad, though Mohamed Diomande is a good start, having impressed since January.

Money will need to be spent, however, to make sure Philippe Clement has the right players to build a successful, title-winning team for the next campaign.
