Philippe Clement will be delighted as brand new SPFL development emerges for Rangers

Rangers and Philippe Clement haven’t had a lot to smile about since their Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic at Hampden Park.

Barring the signing of Jefte, no further additions have been in the transfer window while it has also been confirmed that James Bisgrove has left his position as chief executive at Ibrox for a new role in Saudi Arabia.

However, the Gers boss may have been handed a slight boost following a new announcement from the SPFL that has been relayed to supporters by Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack.

Reporting via X on Friday (31 May) Jack said: “Premiership clubs have passed a resolution to phase out the use of artificial pitches in the top flight.”

The SPFL has granted a two-year period for teams inside the Scottish Premiership to move away from their current artificial pitches, meaning these new measures will be in place for the start of the 2026/27 league campaign.

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox after Celtic loss at Hampden Park?

While it remains to be seen whether or not Clement will even still be the man in charge at Ibrox when these new rules are put in place, the Belgian will almost certainly be delighted to hear this latest update.

Ahead of the Gers’ clash with Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena this season, the Rangers boss was quick to slam the artificial pitch and point out the fact none of Europe’s other top leagues use such a surface.

As quoted by the Rangers Review (12 November) he said: “It’s not the look, I knew what it was, I’d seen it, it’s just another ball game. Different. We need to adapt.

“You look at the big leagues, the top leagues, there’s not one artificial pitch. There’s a reason for that. For the quality of football, for the quality also for spectators to watch good football games, it needs to be on grass pitches.

“It is what it is and we will adapt. It’s not an excuse for any result.”

Clement will have much bigger and more important issues on his agenda heading into the summer transfer window than this latest resolution, but it will likely be a decision from the SPFL that he completely agrees with.

Hopefully, the Belgian will last long enough at Ibrox to see it in action.
