Ally McCoist refuses to talk about Cyriel Dessers as ‘bad’ Rangers star claim made
Ally McCoist was quick to move on after Andy Townsend accused Cyriel Dessers of being poor in front of goal in his debut Rangers season.
The Nigerian made the move to Ibrox last summer and was able to score 22 goals in all competitions [FotMob] across an up-and-down campaign.
While speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast (31 May, 09:08am), the two presenters debated names of ‘unlucky finishers’ from listeners with Dessers being one of those.
Townsend wasn’t holding back as he said: “He’s just a bad finisher.”
McCoist wasn’t prepared to bite on that comment as he moved on quickly to another topic, but not before a quick response.
He replied: “We need to talk about this, the difference between a poor finisher and an unlucky finisher and it is something we’ll definitely talk about.”
Has Cyriel Dessers been “bad” for Rangers?
Dessers joined the Gers over the summer from Cremonese in a deal worth a reported £5.4 million [The Herald].
This was the second-highest fee paid by the club across both transfer windows with Danilo being the most expensive at £6m [Sky Sports].
With that being said, he has to be held to the standards of the fee that was paid and it could be argued he has played to a good standard.
With over 20 goals in all competitions, as a striker, there isn’t much more that he can do to prove himself as a finisher.
In the Scottish Premiership, the only Rangers player to score more than him is James Tavernier who takes set pieces and penalties. Take out his spot kicks and he has just five league goals [FotMob].

This would put Dessers at the top of the goalscoring charts for the club by five goals above Abdallah Sima who scored 11.
The Nigerian may be disappointed to have scored just 16 league goals from an xG of 19.14 but his tally is still respectable for his debut campaign.
If he can refine his game and take his chances on a regular basis when they come he could become one of the most feared forwards in the division.
In other Rangers news, an Ibrox-linked defender may fail his medical as transfer news has emerged from the club this past week.
