£10m transfer claim emerges with five new signings mooted at Rangers
Jim Duffy believes that if Rangers are to sign five new players this summer, they will be spending £10million on them, with a couple on each.
However, if they are to sell players, they will be able to spend more lavishly on new signings, in his opinion.
Gers are still bridging the gap with Celtic in terms of squad quality with Philippe Clement laying emphasis on an overhaul this summer.
Speaking on Clyde One Superscoreboard on 30 May, Duffy, a BBC pundit, said at 32:07: “Rangers are in the £2million bracket. That’s the bracket they’re in. Financially, I’m talking about in terms of targeting players.
“For instance, if they’re bringing in five players, then £2million each. This summer, with the recruitment, you would look at and think that’s the kind of price bracket they’re going to have to work within if they don’t bring in money from somewhere.
“I think they know they need more tried and tested players that are ready to go and compete in the short term in the Scottish game and ready to challenge Celtic. Psychologically, I think Celtic have the advantage.”
Rangers realistically need to spend a lot more to beat Celtic to the title
Gers realistically need to spend around £20million if they are to beat Celtic to the title as the gap in squad quality between the two clubs is significant, with Celtic having a clear advantage in terms of depth and quality.
The additional Champions League revenue that Celtic will receive will likely be used to strengthen their squad further.
This will widen the gap between the two clubs if Rangers do not invest significantly in their squad.
Moreover, Gers have shown that they can compete with Celtic in individual matches even though they’ve lost by narrow margins, but they have struggled to maintain that level of performance over a whole season.
This suggests that their squad lacks the depth and quality to sustain a title challenge over the course of a full season.
The club have been in a period of transition under Clement and while they have made progress, they need to invest in the squad to fully implement his vision and style of play.
Signing two attackers, two defenders and one midfielder are the basics that are needed and more could come in if players leave.
