Rangers star James Tavernier unfair criticism admission made by BBC pundit
Kenny Miller believes that James Tavernier and Jack Butland could both be on their way out of Rangers this summer.
If Tavernier does not leave Ibrox, Miller believes that he should stay on as captain, despite his recent struggles.
He is also of the opinion that some of the criticism thrown the English defender’s way is unfair.
Miller, a BBC pundit, told Clyde One Superscoreboard on 29 May at 18:16: “There might be a situation where Tavs is not at the club and somebody else needs to be selected to lead.
“I know the obvious ones there, in terms of Jack Butland being there, if he’s still there as well and if Rangers reject prospective bids from any number of clubs.
“I believe the captain should be right there in the heat of the battle. If Tavernier is still there, he gets so much criticism, unfairly in my opinion. If he’s still there, for me stays as the captain.”
James Tavernier must improve defensively
Tavernier has been a key figure for Gers, particularly for his offensive contributions, but his defensive abilities have often been a subject of scrutiny.
His performances have at times left gaps in Rangers’ defence, making the team vulnerable to opposition attacks.
Even in the Old Firm game against Celtic, he made a crucial error that someone with his level of experience must not.
If he is to retain his spot in the team, this is one aspect of his game he needs to improve on.
However, it’s worth noting that the 32-year-old’s contributions to the team’s offensive play cannot be understated.
Dropping James Tavernier as captain is not the solution for Rangers
His ability to score goals and create opportunities for his teammates has been exceptional, making him one of the most prolific defenders in the club’s history.
In terms of Gers’ struggles, they are not solely down to Tavernier’s captaincy.
The club’s inconsistency in recruitment has been a significant factor.
They have faced challenges in bringing in players who can consistently perform at a high level, which has impacted the team’s overall performance.
The need for better players this summer is evident, as the club looks to strengthen its squad and improve its performance in both domestic and European competitions.
In other Rangers news, a player has already bid farewell to his teammates as Gers look to complete yet another summer transfer.
