Kalvin Phillips transfer update emerges at Rangers after new Manchester City development

Rangers would be keen on a move for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips after new developments at the Etihad Stadium, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist reported via HITC on Thursday (30 May) that City have told the midfielder he can leave this summer and they are understood to be willing to cover all of his wages to get him off the books after his poor loan spell at West Ham.

Both the Light Blues and Celtic would be keen to sign Phillips this summer, primarily because of the fact they wouldn’t have to pay the majority of the England international’s current wages.

Clubs in England including Everton and Leeds United are joined by teams throughout Europe in also holding an interest in the 28-year-old who doesn’t appear to be short of options ahead of the start of the transfer window.

Rangers will be keen to strengthen this summer under Philippe Clement, but it remains to be seen just how much money the Light Blues have to throw around in the transfer market having missed out on the title.

If it comes down to a straight shootout between them and the Hoops, Brendan Rodgers’ side may just have the financial power to jump ahead of the Gers in this race, particularly as they are guaranteed a Champions League spot.

Although Phillips has recently gone through a difficult period in his career following his loan at West Ham, he is undoubtedly an excellent player and under the right management he is capable of being world-class.

But the 28-year-old hasn’t produced to that level for a while now. Ultimately, it will be an immense gamble of the Gers and that may not be what Clement and his side need as they prepare for a big summer rebuild.
