Rangers eye transfer profit as multimillion pound Sam Lammers sale lined up at Ibrox

Rangers are now hopeful of turning a profit on the sale of Sam Lammers after his return to form out on loan, according to Rangers Review.

The outlet reported via their website on 29 May that with the decision made to sanction a permanent exit for the Dutchman the club were now expecting to recoup the fee they paid Atalanta a year ago for his failed move to Ibrox.

That was reported at the time to be around £3.5million [Daily Record, 15 June], and with multiple clubs in the race to take him off the Light Blues’ hands there is now seen as a reasonable chance that he will go for at least that after a record-breaking temporary move to FC Utrecht.

The 28-year-old scored 11 times after his January loan exit, including setting a new record for the Eredivisie side by finding the net in seven consecutive matches through March and April.

Unlikely Rangers transfer asset for Philippe Clement

Five months ago there was little prospect of anyone paying much of anything for Lammers, let alone a fee that would see Rangers turn a profit on what had proven to be a disastrous Michael Beale signing.

Two goals in 31 total appearances for the club saw him increasingly bypassed by the action as he was regularly fielded as a ineffective number 10.

While his exploits back in the Netherlands might suggest that he could be an answer at number nine next term it surely makes more sense to take one of the likely offers that are incoming to let him start again elsewhere.

His success on loan does appear to indicate that he wasn’t used correctly at Ibrox, but if he failed to hit the ground running in front of goal next season there would be precious little patience with him after his poor debut half-season in Glasgow.

With the likes of Borna Barisic and John Lundstram leaving the club on free transfers there are few obvious options to boost the transfer budget with sales so a lucrative deal for Lammers would be hugely welcome.

Star keeper Jack Butland could feasibly bring in a fee far greater than any other, although losing the Englishman would leave a huge gap to fill, but there is reportedly no current interest from the Premier League in taking him back south.
